Pigeon Guillemots

Guillemot in front of a nest crevice
Pigeon Guillemots are funny auk-like seabirds. on fact they are members of the same family.  They are different from most auks in that they nests in crevices rather than in the open, and they usually lay two eggs, rather than one.  They are quite clumsy on land but very acrobatic in the water.  I spent two lovely long afternoons watching a colony of at least thirty guillemots.  It was foggy (deliciously cool) and some were out to sea so it is quite possible the colony is significantly larger.
Two guillemots on a little ledge.
