Alfred came a'callin

Alfred came a'callin, devestating Connecticut. We had no fall and winter looks like another doozie. More at www.myfiddlestix.blogspot.com/

IRENE - Day 6

Sloppy mish/mash page as I strive to record some of what surrounds me from Irene remnants. The direct shoreline is so much worse with major devastation than we are. Power companies are struggling to get schools open (already eating up "snow" days) Finally there are some gas stations open and a few restaurants and the grocery store. There are water refill stations and pot luck suppers here and there, many Good Neighbors. We are lucky Irene was only a TS but enough is enough. AND rain and humidity coming for the holiday weekend Yippee!

A very quick sketch of the lovely little ground cover I discovered in the Maine woods, pretty much actual size, each stem seeming to be independent of the others covering the ground. The bright red berries reminded me of holly. Wonder what it is?
The layout is rather haphazard, a quick view of the pond/lake - and my thoughts, I never know how to fill out such a page.

Sultan of the Night

My "new" petunia from the nursery this spring. So dramatic I had to get a pot. They are still blooming profusely and still quite dramatic. The blossoms are almost black - so I would have named them Phantom of the Night.

Full of Freckles Moon

Full Buck (male deer sprout their antlers this month) Full Thunder (as lightening storms are most frequent this month) and Full Hay (as Haying is underway, and perhaps well into the night with a full moon).
Hastily done, as I spotted the full moon on the way home from Harry Potter Finale (wonderful, but sad to see it end). And my masking of the little moon failed me, so there are freckles on this full moon!

Mystery Flowers

Too lovely not to draw. This bed of flowers was huge and bright and delightful. There were several stakes holding these tall blossoms up but I chose not to include them, many were at least three feet tall. What a dramatic bouquet they would make!

My Square

New England is very wood-sie. Deciduous trees everywhere it seems. Our front yard is full of big oaks and dogwoods and maples and over the years our view of the sky has diminished significantly . From the front porch there appears to only be a square yard to view the heavens. I love trees but I love the sky more!

Full Salt Marsh Moon

Ok, it's not the Full Salt Marsh Moon, but it was for me. I was on my
way home from babysitting Colin, Cali and Ella at 9;30 . I hadn't noticed any moon until I passed over the salt marsh bridge. There it was, casting a lovely orange glow on the grasses. I had to paint from memory but it was memorable.

Creepy Crawlies

Inspired by Apple-Pine's beetle discovery and sketch page - I went out to discover what is currently crawling about in my yard. Quite a bit and this is only a scratch of the New England surface.

Sorry this scan is a bit blurry and oh yeah I mislabeled the green june bug as a brown june bug - late night texting error.

Ring Around the Rhodos

The Rhododendron are in full bloom and we have a couple of giant specimens. Our two lab pups really enjoy hiding under them and racing around them and tearing off leaves and blossoms, so I was able to do a quick sketch while they last.

The "Neighborhood"

The flowers are out, the trees are leafing and the colors popping - in DC, my brother's beautiful neighborhood.

Full OOPs Moon

Oops, I added the script too late last night,(last month was the Lenten Moon) this month is the Full Pink Moon, or Grass Moon or Egg Moon or among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon. With all the flooding it should be the Full Flood Moon.
Sunday night was cloudy with more rain in the forecast but I did catch glimpses of the moon occasionally, and the coastal marsh was in flood stage, much of the sea grass under water.

Springtime Somewhere

My Brother in DC took photos of the gorgeous cherry blossoms and now fields of tulips and daffodils - I am still waiting here in Connecticut.

Bonita

My brother, Mark, in Tucson has a frequent feline visitor to his patio. His lovely home is very near the Rincon Mountains and the open desert Saguaro National Park , (lucky) so he gets lots of "visitors". We had hoped to catch sight of her while visiting last month. Mark believes she is pregnant this year - sure do wish she could bring the cubs to visit.
So - I posted from pictures (hope that's ok). I knew I could not capture her full beauty, but it was fun trying.

Solitude

There is something about the quiet, clean, clear cold of freshly fallen snow to make one stop and reflect..... Sandra Rice / MyFiddlestix.blogspot.com

Goodbye 2010

2010 was a trying year in my house and finished likewise. I will focus on the good times and thankfully there were many - but I hope 2011 will be kinder and gentler.
