SILVER BIRCH BARK

My silver birches have beautiful bark and looking carefully I can see quite a few different colours, sketched here in Derwent drawing pencils and graphitint on crumpled watercolour paper.

My next step is to interpret the drawing in textile,  here using silk and organza appliqueed onto a cotton background and hand embroidered with yarns and threads.

SKETCHING TREES

I've just started a new project to draw the trees in my garden, starting with my silver birches.

One morning this week the sun was shining through the raindrops on the delicately hanging twigs in the front garden, making them look like fairy lights

.I crumpled some pastel paper and used Derwent drawing pencils to make the sketch then added the raindrops with a watersoluble pencil dipped in water.

The bark of these beautiful trees is full of unexpected colour and I really enjoyed drawing this using some Graphitint pencils that I had forgotten about for years.

The weather on Good Friday was truly spring like, warm enough to sit in the garden and draw one of my favourite trees while sitting in a deckchair and listening to the birds singing their hearts out.

Silver birch is my favourite tree and when I saw a piece of the bark on the ground in the woods as we walked to the port one day I had to pick it up to bring home to draw.  I left it for a few days for it to dry and for the bugs to crawl away and then got to work first with a fine pen and then my favourite coloured pencils in my home made sketchbook.

I've been taking part in the January challenge over at AJW and here is one of my interpretations of the subject for day 16.  This is a view I see almost every day through my kitchen window.

MIDSUMMER SKETCHING

 

Isn't it lovely at this time of year to be able to sit outside till the sun goes down!  I had a lovely couple of hours on Friday while Bob watched the football drawing my favourite part of the garden.  The low sun was just catching the trunks of the silver birches and had to be captured in my tinted paper sketchbook in my museum colour pencils.
