A morning in the bird sanctuary near Rome-Concetta Flore

There is a recent reclaimed natural area, by the sea near Rome, managed by volunteers of the  Italian League for Bird Protection (LIPU).
The area used to be very degraded; as the works for the "Rome harbour" started, it was agreed that an extention of land would be cleaned, dug to form shallow ponds, and the original mediterranean vegetation restored.
In a few years the CHM Lipu Ostia has become a pivotal place for birds migrating and reproducing.
I spent a morning of a nice clear day, sketching the kingfisher, the herons and ducks, that I later coloured at home.I always tell myself I need to do that more often!

  1. Lovely paintings!! The second one is my favourite! I face great difficulties while painting water and reflections. Any tips? :)

    1. Hi Tarang, for water I use a flat-tipped paintbrush, which is very useful used both horizontally and vertically. It can also come useful for wavy waters, since moving it at a slant, it offers the contrast between the shady and sunlit side of the wave, and its crispness. I hope I've been useful.: )

    1. Thank you, Elva! Our grey heron is smaller than your blue but very similar...and in fact, lacking cardinals and other very colorful birds- except migratory species- the european kingfisher stands out like a tropical jewel out of place. Its turquoise flashes in any light, powerful. You'd love it.
