Little Survivor Bluebird

Little Survivor Bluebirdird by Teri DC
Little Survivor Bluebirdird, a photo by Teri DC on Flickr.
Here is the story on this little baby.
Remember when I sketched the baby bluebird with his mouth open begging for food on 7/20/12?

Last week when I walked by the nest box, I found this little baby on the grass and the nest completely disrupted with no grass in it at all. So I put some old grass in and put the baby back. There were two babies missing and presumed dead. The Mother soon came to take care of this one.
Then a few days later when I looked in the box, all the grass was gone and the baby looked so forlorn, so I added more grass and worried that the mother had abandoned it.
I finally saw her feeding it again and it is getting bigger and healthier. I have high hopes that it will continue to survive and grow to fledge.
One thing I have learned from being a bluebird nest box monitor is that the parents will allow handling of the babies.

  4. great sketch and story.
happy to hear that the birds did not abandon the child since a 'human' rescued it. that's a new lesson for me too.
    thanks for sharing.

  5. Aaaaw, what a beauty Teri, beautiful sketch! Who or what do you think is disturbing the next like that? A cat? A rat? I'm also holding thumbs for this little one...

  6. Thanks for the comments. I feel like a nervous new mother always worrying about the baby and checking to see if mom is taking care of it.
I have been wondering what is disturbing the nest also. We do have feral cats in the neighborhood........and it always seems to happen at night because I have found the problems in early morning.
Keeping my fingers crossed. It will fledge in about 4-5 days.

  8. I wonder what is getting in there??? I've seen birds empty a nest box that they want to take over, i.e. a flicker throwing out a bluebird's nesting material one time ... and another time a different flicker pulling a starling's nesting material out. Maybe another bird is trying to take over this box.
