New Feeder!

I'm really enjoying the new peanut feeder we got at Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary in Liberty, MO.  (If you get the chance, VISIT.  The visitors' center is lovely, and the trails are varied and beautiful.  And yep, that's my sketch of the building at the top of their web page.)

The birds found this one almost immediately!  It's very popular...who would have thought?

And the big red-bellied woodpecker has been inspecting ALL the feeders...he's gorgeous...

This was a very quick sketch to begin with, but as he kept returning I was able to develop his head more.  Could NOT match that flaming color, though...

  1. Oh, what a great job you did on this fine bird! I had to nod, thinking how we're always amazed how fast the birds find a new feeder or different arrangement in the offerings. They are such fun to watch. Charming, Kate.

  2. Some they do, and some they don't, that's what surprises me! WE bought a woodpecker feeder, with holes for peanut butter mix the same day, and raccoons found it immediately, but no birds. They STILL haven't. Joseph switched it out with my suet feeder on the front porch because it was so active, on the theory that they'd know where to look...nope, nothing. Not bird one. <:-(

    And thank you!

  3. Love this page, Kate. The woodpecker's head is stunning and you captured its wonderfully patterned wings with so few strokes. Yum!
