Jill, I do 95% from life, and then check details in my many bird books, usually. I wasn't sure about the shape of the bill, so a closeup photo was helpful in this case.
Oh, and I normally cross-check several books, since they can be fairly different, too! That's where I find details like size, habitat, preferred foods, and so forth.
These are lovely little birds, do you sketch from real life or use a photo.

ReplyDeleteYour juncoes make me miss winter and snow! So cheerful! I've got juncoes, but they have to poke around in wet grass.
