sketching snowbirds

sketching snowbirds, originally uploaded by Cathy (Kate) Johnson.
Lovely little birds show up in numbers every winter! Notes on their size, habits and more on the sketch...

There are notes on the image in Flickr...you can see them if you click on the journal page.

  1. These are lovely little birds, do you sketch from real life or use a photo.

  2. Jill, I do 95% from life, and then check details in my many bird books, usually. I wasn't sure about the shape of the bill, so a closeup photo was helpful in this case.

  3. Oh, and I normally cross-check several books, since they can be fairly different, too! That's where I find details like size, habitat, preferred foods, and so forth.

  4. Your juncoes make me miss winter and snow! So cheerful! I've got juncoes, but they have to poke around in wet grass.

  5. They are cute little guys, aren't they. And yes, snow is gorgeous!

  6. Delightful juncoes! Makes me want to sketch mine that are all over my feeder now.

  7. Yours are as dapper as Fred Astaire in their white and tails, Kate. I so loved to see them fox
    trotting around back in Connecticut.
