Meet the correspondents—Vickie Henderson

My mother once asked me to draw something for her and I expressed doubt. She looked at me quizzically. "What do you mean? You could draw as early as you could walk.”
Her comment gave me pause. I had almost forgotten. One of my earliest loves was drawing. Its twin and only rival, exploring the world outside. Though I didn't put the two together at an early age, given free time, I could be found either sketching or wandering our Tennessee farm, examining everything happening around me.

Watercolor arrived much later in my life, after my two sons were grown and I had spent 20 plus years in the mental health field. I had admired the translucence and beauty of this medium for so many years, I finally said, I’ve got to try this. And so it was that in 2000, I took my first watercolor class and found myself completely smitten.
Within the same year, another significant event occurred. I went out in the field with a wildlife photographer. This completely rekindled my passion for nature and paired it with another childhood love, photography. Putting the three together--nature, art and photography--has brought more joy to my life than I could ever imagine. Sprinkle in a little story-telling, and you now know me pretty well. You can find a sampling of my nature journals at Vickie Henderson Art.
I am delighted to know Cathy (Kate) Johnson and to be included among the international correspondents invited to contribute to her latest endeavor, Sketching in Nature. I look forward to meeting all our visitors and sharing my love for the natural world through art.
