I've got a lot of gall...

Nature drawings--galls

Actually, nature does...in all sizes and shapes. I posted these drawings to my Flickr site the other day and Joan Gillman Smith kindly shared a link telling all about these oddities of nature: http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/entomology/factsheets/galls.html I thought you might enjoy reading about them, too!

These particular ones are all over a small sapling in my side yard. First, I did a careful study--the one at top--and then I decided that quite often a quick gesture sketch works just as well.

You be the judge:

Nature drawings--galls, gesture sketch

Of course it all depends on how much time you have and what mood you're in. If I have time and am feeling contemplative, I take all the time in the world. If I'm in a rush, I go for the basics--in either case, the act of drawing helps me to pay attention, and to remember...

  1. Ha ha. I like your title! Yes, sometimes a quick sketch is all you need. And it is even more fun to flip through an old journal and say, oh yes...I remember that time. A fast sketch is better than no sketch at all isn't it?

  2. Very interesting! I don't know that I've ever seen a gall in real life. I'll be on the lookout now. Thanks!

  3. Thank you both! Yes, that's what I really love about any sketch at ALL, it brings it back alive. I really remember what was going on in my life! And Katy, I'd be willing to bet you have, just hadn't realized...sometimes they're HUGE, on a tree trunk. That's what makes some burl pattern in the wood...

  4. Wonderful page! Interesting perspective on the two sketch differences...it's like the wren you captured in a quick gesture sketch, all of the essential information and experience is there, and maybe more so.
