American kestrel

I have been wanting to do another bird illustration and almost everyday as I drive down county road 1100 I am inspired by an American kestrel perched in a fence row. I finally got around to doing the drawing. He is always perched in the same spot on a power line but I decided to put him on a more organic perch.  It is roughly 12"X12" and all colored pencil on Bristol board.

  1. Nate, you really captured one of my favorite birds! What a beauty. Hard to believe they're about the size of a robin...

  4. Wonderful drawing. I have rehabilitated a number of kestrels and this drawing is both beautiful and accurate. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I would NEVER call this beautiful drawing a SKETCH, however. It would be wonderful to see your preliminary drawings that led to this.
