We don't seem to have seen many butterflies this summer but now at the end of September I have been amazed at the crowds of them gathering on the ivy bank at my gate. I've seem Red Admirals, Commas, Peacocks and Cabbage Whites every morning when the sun shines. The whole bank seems alive with insects feeding on the fragrant nectar of these insignificant flowers. Later in the year the berries will feed the birds throughout the winter and then in the spring of course I find all the seedlings sprouting up where I don't want them!
