Painting Outdoors

Outdoor Watercolor Sketch
©2012 Carolyn A Pappas, Outdoor Watercolor Sketch. Watercolor in small watercolor moleskine.

I have a small confession to make. This is the first time that I have painted watercolor outdoors. In the past I have always done sketching in ink or pencil and then painted indoors later, or have looked out the window to paint.

This little sketch doesn't seem like much, but it was really exhilarating for me. It was about seven o'clock in the evening and I sat on the back porch to paint this. There were dark clouds and the sun was filtering through, reflecting yellow light onto the water.

The wind was blowing my stuff all over the place! I can't believe I waited this long to try painting outdoors and I can't wait until I get another chance.

  1. Your little painting has lots of life. One of the things I love about painting outdoors is that it brings back the memory of time and place.

  3. I really like the light quality...and isn't it different, working right out there in it!? I love it, challenging though it is. Elva's right!

  4. Plein air is challenging. Dealing with the elements--sun, wind, rain, heat, cold, biting insects, to name a few of the challenges/obstacles of getting an image on the page. But it's well worth it and downright exhilarating. With plein air, ALL of ones senses inform what's put into the picture. There's a depth of storytelling that shows--like your beautiful, light-filled watercolor.

  6. It is SO different working with your paints outside! You've created a wonderful sketch that tells that story, as well as, captures the moment. For me, it is always a challenge to get the sketch down before the air dries the paint. And all of it is right there in your sketch. The breeze, the light, the place, your experience, bringing my own experiences right to mind! Nice.
