Car sketching in Iowa

Car sketching in Iowa, originally uploaded by Elizabeth Smith.

I traveled recently in Iowa and had a chance to do some car sketching. The countryside was so lovely, even though a lot of the tree color had passed.

These are composite sketches done in my Pentalic Nature Sketch 7 x 5 inch spiral-bound pad with a Pitt sepia pen, with watercolor added later.

The weather was cool and crisp, the sun bright and colors vivid! Wonderful! By the way, I was a passenger ...please do not draw and drive!

  4. Thanks, Teri! it's a lovely part of the state, right along the Mississippi River.

Hi Pam - there's a little bit of everything, but mostly those things that appealed to me - it's easier when we slowed down for the smaller towns!

Kate, you are so right - I look back at my sketches and the memories come flooding back. Journaling a few small sketches is a great way to capture those!

Thank you Paula! They are definitely quick drawings, mistakes and all, but they seem to capture some of the rolling countryside. I'm so glad you enjoyed them!

  5. Great sketches and I love the way you lay out your pages. The first one with the leaf in the foreground and the wider perspective of the scenery behind it is terrific.

  6. Thanks so much Ruca! Adding the leaf was an afterthought. I picked it up at a roadside stop and decided it needed to be on the page! Not all of my pages work out, but I was pleased with these!! Thanks!

  7. The sketches look great. It's convenient to have a car around, so that you can drive to places like that and draw, no? That's a lot of fun, and there are a lot of things you can see and draw.

  8. Indeed, drawing while driving is a no-no, ha ha ha...

In any case, you did some pretty wonderful sketches. It does feel convenient to be a passenger in a car and sketch to your heart's content. It's a great activity to do during a road trip.
