We recently spent a couple of days in a Galveston hotel with our eldest granddaughter, Mikala. Her mom is an engineer working on site at the island's hospital, still repairing & remodeling from hurricane damage. The work will probably take another 5 years to complete, with Kristen often a couple of hours drive away from home.

Lots of beach time with Mikala, which means lots of combing the beach for treasures! But she took time to watch me paint a quick impression of the scene in my sketchbook.

I joined her in gathering shells, pincer fragments, and even a dead crab to sketch. At first she thought the latter was disgusting, but at the end of the day she had saved one too. Much to her mother's chagrin!
