Running away to the woods...

Cutleaf Toothwort

My best remedy for tension is to get out into the woods and paint. Yesterday I imagined I might find a morel or two (doubtful!) but I KNEW I'd find wildflowers to add to my collection, and I did. J. and I had driven through the Missouri Natural Area the other day and I'd spotted a different flower in bloom, so yesterday I packed up my gear and went in search of it.

It was a Cutleaf Toothwort, a very pretty little wildflower said to be abundant--but in our woods, far outnumbered by spring beauties and rue anemones!

This is the best picture I got of it, above...

As a work in progress:

It goes by several names, even its Latin binomial varied--here's what Missouri Wildflowers has to say, though--you'll find it on this page: http://www.missouriwildflowerguide.com/White.asp

(And sorry, Yahoo/Flickr seems to be having issues today--things are opening SLOWLY...)

  2. Beautiful sketch!
Isn't nice to plunk down and paint in the woods? I like the combination of delicate flowers and jagged leaves on this plant.

  3. Kate, you are truly a gift to the naturalist world and the artists in it. I always appreciate your info and artistic interpretation. Who couldn't like nature after reading and viewing your work. Thanks for being a friend.

  4. What a strange and unique name for such a delicate wildflower! One can only wonder...

I love the job you did on this plant; I feel like I'd know it if I saw it! That blush of pink on the petals is wonderful, and I especially like the way you painted the leaves. I can't wait to see what else is in bloom! :)
