An Old Monarch

This Monarch had seen better days... his color was faded but his wings were still in pretty good shape. He came through earlier this year -- I guess he was on his way back from Mexico.

Later this fall the Monarchs will move through our area migrating to Mexico in huge numbers. We will tag some of them with a little tiny sticker for the Entomology Department of the University of Kansas so they can track the migration. If you would like to know more about this project and the work the Monarch Watch is doing, check out their link here: http://monarchwatch.com/. It is amazing that these butterflies will travel thousands of miles to over-winter in Mexico and then travel back.

(This was done in ink & watercolor.)
