Meet the Correspondents: Sigrid Frensen

Hi everyone! My name is Sigrid Frensen and I’m a botanical artist from the Netherlands. I’m a bit late with introducing myself. Things are very hectic at the moment in my house. But let’s not talk about that. I guess you want to know something about me and my work. So here I go.

As I said I’m a botanical artist. I work mainly with pencils and coloured pencils on Fabriano designo 5 Liscia paper. Sometimes I do some watercolour too and if it’s botanical and precise I work on the same kind of paper. You’ll notice that my work looks a bit different from the works by other artists on this blog. My work is very clean, accurate and precise. No little sketch lines, no little notes or journals on my work. I’m glad Kate asked me to join this blog anyway. I would love to make a nature journal sketchbook but for me it is really very hard to make quick sketches and impressions. It’s something I would love to learn though and I guess this Blog will give me loads of tips and inspiration to start with it. I’m a perfectionist and I think that helps me to make good botanical drawings it just isn’t very useful when you have to be quick.

The subjects I choose are often twigs, dead leaves, fruits, nuts, pieces of bark, seed pods and things like that. Flowers I do too but I just love to draw seeds and buds more than drawing the flowers.

I have my own web shop where I sell cards and giclée prints. It is not yet in English but I hope that will come soon. I also have my own Blog. It is not only about my botanical drawing. I write about my family and my garden too. And of course I have my photostream on Flickr.

Oh, and btw, That photo at the top of this post is taken in Eenrum. I was demonstrating botanical drawing at a nursery there. And the drawing of the Anemone here is what I made that day. Hope to post soon some interesting stuff for you. Finally I want to thank Kate for inviting me to join this blog. It's an honour!

  1. Sigrid, welcome! I'm delighted you could join us! Actually, I've invited a couple of other botanical artists, they just haven't had time to check in yet--I wanted a broad range of styles and techniques that fit within our basic criteria, and you fit right in. Beautiful, beautiful work...
