My husband spotted this bird's skull next to the front hedge the other evening after our walk. A puzzling find as there were no other bones about and the skull is really picked clean, so obviously has been in that state for a good amount of time. We wondered if it had been dropped by a crow, playing about, you know how they do. It measures about 3 inches in length. I'm wondering what kind of bird it might be...might have been.. any guesses out there?

What a wonderful find! I can't help you with the type of bird, but I would love to know where it came from! The beak looks fairly long, though, and takes up more than half the length. Woodpecker? Beautiful painting!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Heidi, this is a gorgeous study. Bird bones are so interesting, with their web-like formation to keep them lighter!
ReplyDeleteHeidi, When we lived in the mountains of Wyoming, I found a skull that looked just like this, and no other bones - just like yours, and I believe it was from a Clark's Nutcracker. We had a lot of those around.
