We have a variety of woodpeckers...downies, hairies, red-bellied like this guy, the occasional yellow-shafted flickr, and once even a pileated woodpecker. No red-headed woodpeckers, though they are abundant in the nearby state park. I had fun sketching these guys...
This is logn time I have seen woodpeckers. This is not so far that we fully lost this bird. Red Maple Tree
ReplyDeleteRed-headed at our suet pole every morning, as well as all of the others you mention, but no pileated woodpeckers in town. They are at the state park close-by. You've pictured such a beauty here!
ReplyDeleteI love your picture of the woodpecker. How gorgeous, I want to draw one, too! :)
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have so many woodpeckers close by. Occasionally I get an acorn woodpecker, a downy or a flicker. Too civilized around here for them to live in the neighborhood. Fortunately I leave town often and see them often in wilder areas.
ReplyDeleteThanks all! I do love to watch these guys...I'd love to see an acorn woodpecker!
ReplyDeleteGreat observations/sketches Kate! I love the woodpeckers too. I get flickers and downys and the occasional red-bellied at my feeder in town and have heard the rather maniacal "laugh" of the red-headed at George Washington's boyhood home across the river. It's a sound that, once heard, you're not likely to forget!
ReplyDeleteGreat sketch!
